Causes

Only one of the terrorists who started the attacks was captured by the Indian government. This terrorist, named Ajmal Kasab, claimed to represent a group known as Lashkar-e-Taliba (LeT).

The LeT, translated as “the army of righteousness”, is an Islamic extremists group with the goal of establishing an Islamic state in South Asia, to unite all Muslim-majority regions surrounding Pakistan to raise Jihad against all non-Muslim communities, and to annihilate Hinduism and Judaism. As India is a country with a large Hindu majority, this made India a target of the LeT. Attacks in India were also aimed to raise tensions between the Hindu and Muslim communities in India, and through that help with the LeT’s recruitment strategy in India.
